Auto damage estimation from photos
Turning images of a damaged vehicle into a line-level repair estimate — parts, labor, paint, and a body shop assignment. The action sits immediately downstream of FNOL in the claims workflow and immediately upstream of settlement.
The three rungs
An adjuster drives to the vehicle or to the body shop, inspects the damage in person, writes the estimate by hand against a parts and labor reference book, and attaches Polaroid photos to the paper file. Variants survived into the 2010s in parts of the US market.
Cloud SaaS and classical ML; tools founded roughly 1995 – 2015.
The modern and AI-native rungs are populated by different generations of tool. CCC ONE was built through the 1980s-2000s to standardise the modern workflow (photo submission + centralised estimating + shop assignment). Tractable moved the action to AI-native in 2014, shipping end-to-end deep-learning pipelines that read photos directly into line-level estimates in seconds. Snapsheet sits on the modern rung despite being photo-first; its vision models are classical, not generative.
