What it does

Workiva is a cross-industry reporting platform founded in 2008 as WebFilings in Ames, Iowa, rebranded to Workiva in 2014, and taken public on the NYSE (ticker: WK) in December 2014. It serves more than 6,600 organizations across finance, healthcare, energy, and insurance, including over 85% of the Fortune 1000.

Why it shows up in an insurance stack. Workiva's core value proposition is linked data: a number changes in source, every downstream output — 10-K, statutory filings, NAIC schedules, MAR control narratives, board pack — updates and re-validates. For a US carrier that currently runs NAIC statutory reporting on Excel binders and Word templates, Workiva replaces the binder, not the general ledger. Its own marketing scopes the insurance use case to "financial, statutory, and regulatory reporting" and SOX/MAR internal controls, not claims or underwriting.

Named insurance customers. Workiva's March 2026 AI GRC platform launch featured Alexander Davis, Deputy CFO of Pie Insurance, on the record. Separately, American Enterprise (a US life and annuity group) published a detailed Model Audit Rule case study: 13 business processes, 55 control owners, filed on Workiva since 2010. A third anonymised case describes a top-10 US insurer using Workiva across SEC, SOX, investment reporting, statutory reporting, and ERM.

Honest scope note. Insurance is not Workiva's dominant vertical — it is one of several. The insurance sub-industry page lists use cases (statutory, MAR, Form 10-K, NAIC schedules) but the named-customer pool is thin compared to Workiva's enterprise-wide footprint. For a US carrier evaluating it, Workiva competes less with insurance-specific GRC tooling and more with generic SOX and close-management platforms (Wdesk-as-template, AuditBoard, Anaqua).

Analyst position. Workiva appears in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for GRC Tools (Assurance Leaders), the 2023 Forrester Wave for GRC Platforms, and the 2025 Verdantix Green Quadrant for GRC Software (Leader). Commentary from Wheelhouse Advisors on the 2025 Gartner quadrant notes the category has entered an integration phase — every remaining vendor, Workiva included, is scored on breadth of reporting assurance rather than a novel risk-analytics thesis.

Actions mapping. None of the phidea stack's insurance-specific action slugs (claims triage, damage estimation, FNOL intake, underwriting-document extraction, policy-lifecycle administration, catastrophe modeling) map cleanly to Workiva's product. Statutory and MAR reporting is a distinct regulatory-reporting action not currently represented in the action taxonomy. The actions field is therefore empty by design — adding a loose mapping would overstate fit.

Ownership. Publicly traded on NYSE as WK since December 2014. FY2024 revenue approximately $739M.

Known limitations

  • Workiva is a cross-industry reporting platform — insurance is one vertical among finance, healthcare, energy, and corporate issuers. Its insurance feature set targets statutory, SOX/MAR, and ERM reporting rather than core insurance operations like claims, underwriting, or policy administration. (Workiva)
  • The 2025 Gartner GRC Magic Quadrant scope was narrowed to 'assurance leaders' and published with an empty Visionaries quadrant — a signal the category has matured into integration rather than innovation, per trade analysis. (Wheelhouse Advisors)
